August is National Immunizations Awareness Month. It serves to bring attention to one of the most important tasks parents and guardians in Will County and Chicagoland must carry-out at this time of the year ... health exams for their children's attendance in school. School Physicals (and physicals for those taking part in school athletics) are required by State of Illinois schools. (Unless exemptions apply.)
Requirements for IL immunizations have changed since our 2 boys, now 34 and 29, were attending classes. One of those changes surrounds the "Tdap" Vaccine (Tetanus, Diphtheria, acellular Pertussis). In preparation for the 2013-2014 school year, all 6th grade through 12th grade students attending public schools in Illinois must have a "Tdap" booster shot by the time classes begin, be able to prove they have an appointment to receive the vaccine, or prove legitimate exemption.
To assist you in determining what immunizations your child/children may need, below you will find an informational graph for School Vaccination Requirements within the State of IL, provided via the website: Centers for Disease Control & Prevention. More info can also be read HERE.
In Will County, the Will County Health Department offers immunizations on a "walk-in" basis at the Will County Community Health Center located at: 1106 Neal Avenue, in Joliet.
That service is also available by appointment at Will County branch offices located in Bolingbrook ... and University Park. To set-up appointments at those locations, please call: 815.740.8143 or the Will County Immunization Desk at: 800.354.1530.
Besides immunizations, Dental Exams are required in IL for those children entering kindergarten, Second-graders, and Sixth-graders. Vision Exams are also required by no later than October 15th for the year a child is first enrolled in their school, or as required by the individual school system. To discover your school's requirements, please contact your school directly.
August is National Immunizations Awareness Month ... perfect timing as kids head back to school. But those in college and beyond need to be and stay aware of the importance for immunization updates. Please continue to check with your healthcare provider to determine if you are in need of new or updated vaccines.
