How to Keep Kids Safe When Building Snow Caves and Tunnels

How to Keep Kids Safe When

Building Snow Caves and Tunnels

As I write this post, I just know that my 3 grandkids are out enjoying the bright sunshine playing in the deep snowfall the Chicagoland area received last week ...

I can just picture them all bundled up, their sleds and snow fort block-building tools in tow.  I'm sure the new action pics of their fun, activities, and construction accomplishments will begin to flow in soon, for sure.

But as their grampa, I worry that their fun could turn into trouble or danger for them quickly ...

So I did some digging.  I thought I'd share some safety tips I found and shared with their families regarding building snow caves and forts with you.

I hope these safety tips keep your kids safe from collapsing snow forts and caves, frostbite on the skin, and hypothermia.

And maybe some flying snowballs too!

Safety Tips:

*  Make it a rule that your kids check-in often when outside playing in the snow & cold
*  Do NOT let them build forts & tunnels alone. Building in pairs or teams helps prevent tragedy
*  Do NOT let them build forts & caves by a road, a pond, stream, or fencing
*  Do NOT let them build a tunnel or fort taller than they are (This helps in case of collapse)
*  Leave a top/roof off the fort or cave.  Provide a roof (such as cardboard) to complete their snow building
*  Have your kids build tunnels & forts that can accommodate
two or more people.  That way they always have help & assistance, if needed
*  Dress your kids in layers to keep them dry & protect them against cold

Make sure your kids remain aware of each other and their surroundings.  Have them learn and practice these cautionary safety tips when outside in the snow.  That way they and their friends will have fun and remain safe.
